Curtis Earley knows how to live. When we went to the visit Curtis we asked him to have a few of his family and friends there. Wait till you see the video! Curtis' daughter took off from work to be there, his ex-wife, the manager of the apartment complex, his Case Manager, and his neighbors all wanted to be there. Curtis is special to them -- and they are special to him. Curtis also writes poetry and received recognition from the President of the United States for his work.
Curtis wants to help other people. He wants to talk with newly injured folks so that they know their injury isn't the end of their life, but a new journey. He wants to talk to "people on the street" so that they aren't afraid of people in wheelchairs and that they too understand that being in a chair doesn't mean you have to stop living. And he wants to be prepared for this work by taking classes towards a degree in social work.
To achieve this life goal requires that we all work together. Curtis' Case Manager found funding for Curtis' automatic door opener. His friends and family are raising money for him. And we hope that people like you will donate to Be Extraordinary and help out. Together, we can enable Curtis to help others in an way that he is uniquely qualified to do.
In March 2012, Erik Jakobs installed a computer system for Curtis, complete with an AccuPoint head tracking system, two monitors, and speech recognition software. Curtis is very excited, as are we! We designed this system to work well for on-line classes, which Curtis will take starting in the fall of 2012. Thanks to the generous Be Extraordinary donors who made this possible for Mr. Earley. In return, Mr. Earley will start "giving forward" by blogging for InvoTek.
Not all of the costs for Mr. Earley's equipment have been covered. We still need to raise $1,795 . A detailed budget is available here.
